Muscle Cramps: The Hidden Side Effect Of Tamoxifen
I started taking Tamoxifen immediately after completing radiation therapy for breast cancer in the summer of 2009. As a pre-menopausal woman, this is currently the
The first side effects of Tamoxifen that I experienced were hot flashes, tiredness and just a general "sick" feeling all the time but I was determined to tough it out and complete the five years of therapy that is usually recommended for optimal benefits. Then the foot cramps, which I initially attributed to the fatigue, started happening 24 hours a day.
Since the cramps started at about the same time as my Tamoxifen use, I did some research on the internet and found that the breast cancer message boards were filled with women who were suffering from agonizing foot and leg cramps, even though that is not listed as an official side effect. I tried all the suggestions, from taking potassium and magnesium to drinking tonic water, but nothing seemed to help.
When it got to the point where I had to sleep and shower in my shoes because every time I took them off my feet started trembling and then folded up like a sandwich, I decided to seek medical help. My doctors ran numerous blood tests and when the results all came back good, they referred me to a neurologist. That's when I decided to stop taking Tamoxifen and see what would happen.
The neurologist couldn't find anything wrong either but she did give me a prescription for Gabapentin and it at least lessened the severity of the pain if I took it in massive doses. Luckily, after about a month and a
A simple google search on Tamoxifen and foot cramps brings up numerous personal testimonies attesting to the link, not to mention a clinical trial showing women reporting this side effect published back in 2006. The STAR trial compared Tamoxifen to Raloxifene (Evista) and one of their findings was that even though foot and leg cramps are an official side effect of Raloxifene, more Tamoxifen users actually complained about this problem.
I'm not a medical professional so maybe there's something I'm missing but I can't understand why foot and leg cramps aren't listed as an official side effect for Tamoxifen as well. At the very least, doctors themselves should be made aware of the link so some other patient doesn't have to go through the pain and expense of countless tests I had to endure to prove that when it comes to muscle cramps, Tamoxifen may be the real culprit.

BITS; Disruptions: TV Makers Ignore Apps At Their Own Peril
