Recommended Viewing Distances
Wide-screen televisions showing high-resolution content and HDTV look better than regular sets, allowing you to sit closer and experience a more immersive, theaterlike picture.
With wide-screen television sets showing DVD, Blu-ray or HDTV, you can sit as close as 1.5 times the screen's diagonal measurement and still not notice much of a loss in quality, while sitting farther away than three times the screen size means you're likely to miss out on the immersive feel. Here's a rundown of minimum and maximum recommended viewing distances for wide-screen television sets.
6:9 TV diagonalscreen size Min. viewing distance
(in feet) Max. viewing distance
(in feet)
30 3.8 7.6
34 4.3 8.5
Size and your room
Generally, 32-inch and smaller sets are great for bedrooms or guest rooms but too small for the main living room. Television sets with bigger screens are large enough for the whole family to enjoy and will probably be too much for most small bedrooms.
If you're mounting the set inside an entertainment center, be sure it fits in every dimension; also, leave an inch or two on all sides so that the TV has enough ventilation. If you're getting a bigger set, you may want to consider a dedicated stand; many TV makers sell matching stands that increase the aesthetic appeal of their hefty boxes.

TV buying advice! Which model should I get?
TV Buying Advice at Sam's -To doorbuster or not, that is the question.
I am looking at getting a 42" Philips LCD with 1080p 120 mhz tv tomorrow. I looked in the store, and decided I really liked it. It was marked at $1,097. I figured I would wait to see the Black Friday info on here. And when I looked, I saw that Sam's was offering a Philips 42" LCD1080p for $798 as a doorbuster. So I thought, hell yeah - I'm all set!
But then, I discovered there were two different models:
The more expensive one:

And the cheaper one.

My question is that since I probably wont be buying another screen for a while, should I pay $300 for the more expensive one. I am a big movie buff with 20/20 vision and a Ps3 for Blu-Rays and games. I also play video games a lot. Should I spring for what seems like a better model? I wish they just knocked some money off the model they had in stock. Damn! What are your thoughts?

I am buying a new TV. I am on a budget and can't spend too much. I was wondering if I should buy a Dynex or Insignia 1080p LCD Tv, or a 720p Panasonic Plasma? They are the same size, and Panasonic is a more reputable brand.d
p.s. I do know that 1080p is better

MEDIA DECODER; A New Children's Book Parodies a Beloved Classic
19 Dec 2011 at 12:00am Was 2011 the year of the irreverent picture book? In the spring, there was ''Go the - to Sleep,'' the foulmouthed book that spoke to weary parents everywhere and became an instant best seller. (A G-rated version, ''Seriously, Just Go to Sleep,'' is scheduled for release next year.) And now there is another sleeper hit, ''Goodnight iPad,'' a parody...Read more...

SPORTS OF THE TIMES; Gasps From the Grandstand After the Invoice Arrives
10 Apr 2011 at 12:00am Sticker shock keeps getting worse for some sports fans. Out of nowhere, in recent weeks, my personal e-mail received unsolicited cries from the heart from friends who are longtime ticket-holders -- the loyal of the loyal. At least in Gouge City, some fans are being billed for 100 percent increases or more just to hold on to the same seats they have...Read more...
