DTV converter box signal breaks up despite strong signal, why?
I bought an RCA DTV converter box for over-the-air TV. The box seems to work fine. I have a large antenna in the attic. The signal strength (according to the converter box) was an average of 45%, and the picture would freeze up, then start again. So, I bought a signal amplifier (+18 dB) and the signal strength increased to an average of 70%. Yet, the signal breakup still occurs. It's really strange how it goes from 70% signal strength down to 0% in a fraction of a second. The signal is gone for a second or two (at 0%) then returns, fluctuating between 50% and 70%. I understand the fluctuation between 50 and 70%, but don't know why it drops to zero for a couple seconds. How can I fix the complete loss of signal? The DTV converter box instructions recommended using a "smart antenna", which is not in stores yet, but should be in the next several months. Will this fix the problem, or is there a better solution? I'd like to use over-the-air TV.
The signal will drop to 0% every 20 seconds or so -- then return to 70%. Interference may be the cause. Yet, I don't know how to fix it.
There is no interference inside, so it must be outside interference. I wonder what could cause this strange signal loss to 0%.
New Update: my DTV reception just after midnight was perfect with a very stable signal, fluctuating between 70 and 72%. Then I tried it again at 10:00 in the morning, and the signal constantly fluctuated between 40 and 70% -- dropping to 0% several times every minute, but lasting just a second. So, outside interference is the cause, particularly during the DAYTIME. I think I have two solutions: new antenna or new converter box, possibly a smart antenna when it's in stores several months from now. Thank you very much for your suggestions; I will look into them.

Why can't my DTV converter box receive any stations?
I currently live on the third floor of an apartment building in east Fort Worth, Texas, where I've always been able receive several analog stations, albeit with some snow. Recently, I bought a couple of those $40 RCA DTV converter boxes, and they were unable to find any stations whatsoever. So, I bought the most expensive antenna I could find, and I can now pick up analog stations with perfect clarity, but still can't receive any digital signal.
I've noticed that my laptop interferes with reception when it's placed too close to the antennas- could something else be causing similar interference?
To clarify: My analog television receives stations when the antenna is connected directly to the TV, but my DTV converter box can't find any stations whatsoever when the antenna is connected to a converter box, and the converter box is connected to the TV.
In other words, It's the digital broadcasts of stations in my area that I can't seem to receive.

Can a DTV Converter Box Be Manually Tuned w/o a Channel Scan?
I have the RCA DTV Converter Box model #DTA800B1. I want to know if this unit can be manually tuned to a specific channel? When I use the channel up/down button it only tunes to the channels found in the scan and not otherwise. I am trying to get my local CBS affiliate...I can get it on analog but not on DTV. I am using rabbit ears for now until the weather is better to install an outdoor antenna.
