Plasma TV Review: LG PS80 Series

The LG PS80 plasma TV was initially announced at CES 2009 and nominated for Best of CES in the TV category. Though its picture quality can't compare with new competitor plasma televisions like Vizio's VF551XVT or Panasonic's G10, the LG PS80 packs some exclusive features that make it difficult to ignore, including incredible web access.

The greatest of these features is the LG exclusive built-in Netflix streaming. With brick and mortar video rental stores slowly becoming a thing of the past, a plasma TV's compatibility with online movie rental companies becomes more and more important. Also included with the LG PS80 is YouTube capability, Yahoo Widgets and Vudu's on-demand movie rental service. These features all work amazingly well and make for an impressive viewing experience within the LG PS80.

That being said, the picture quality of the LG PS80 was poor. This plasma uses light black levels which, along with sub-par video processing and image retention, make for a distractingly bad visual. Interestingly, the color accuracy is solid and viewable from off angles like any good plasma. Still, the LG PS80's picture quality is way below what you can get from other companies. The additional features and amazing web compatibility might be enough to sway buyers to overlook that shortcoming and buy an LG PS80 anyway.

The LG PS80 is one of the more stylish plasma TVs on the market. It features a single glass pane that not only covers the screen but also hangs a fraction of an inch off the top and sides in a way that draws the entire design together for a sleek look. It beats out every other TV maker but Panasonic and Samsung. A transparent blue color casts a subtle ambiance to the LG PS80
and a thin strip of chrome runs along the bottom. The hidden speakers, matching black and chrome swivel friendly stand, and glossy black frame add up for an oddly futuristic appearance to the LG PS80. This is a case of style over substance, but it does add quite a bit of "cool factor" into the LG PS80.

One area of the LG PS80 plasma that is surprisingly disappointing is its remote. Many buttons crowd the cursor control, and make it difficult to navigate without having to look at your fingers to make sure you're don't click the wrong button. One thing that would've been helpful is a light in the remote, something to show where each button is at without having to squint your eyes. One plus is that it is very simple to find the clustered Netflix, YouTube, Yahoo Widgets and Vudu buttons. The "Energy Saving" button is also handy for conserving energy by slapping an energy saving graphic on the screen. The LG PS80 plasma TV may not match some of its competitors, but its incredible variety of web content providers could go a long way toward changing a skeptic into a buyer. On top of its usage with NetFlix, Vudu and YouTube, its stylish physical appearance is enough to turn heads and will blend into your home while providing you with plenty of good stuff to watch for years to come.
