Cost Of Cable Television Going Up Again

Robert Murdoch controller of News Corporation wants new payment from Time Warner Cable. Fox Broadcast Network also wants to negotiate its rate. Therefore Time Warner Cable is increasing its rates charged to customers to offset increases. DirecTV and AT&T are also raising their rates in February. Originally broadcast channels were dependent on advertising dollars. That has since changed. Cable channels are now paid by both advertising and subscription fees.

Broadcasters say they're entitled to a share of the cable and satellite bills that 100 million households pay monthly. Television bills are now the battleground of broadcast media according to Steve Ridge, president of a media and strategy group consultant firm Frank N. Magid Associates. "The content provided are testing the limits-hoping to raise the bar as high as possible."

Today the average digital cable customer pays $75 monthly. CBS Network asked for a fee increase several years ago. Disney which owns ABC broadcasting is currently asking for sizable fees.

Comcast, the largest cable service provider, will soon own NBC broadcasting pending Federal Regulation. Once the sell is complete, Comcast will be collecting fees from customers and paying NBC directly.

The television industry is also coping with changes brought on with new competition, the internet. Broadband internet offers an infinite variety of choices for consumers; however, broadband isn't free. Service providers usually offer its customers internet broadband.

Broadcasters feel they deserve more compensation from cable/satellite providers for the millions originally invested in original programming. Cable executives are indicating primary demands by broadcasters eventually result in fights. Arguments between the two sometimes result in programs missed by viewers.

Sports network Versus owned by Comcast has been off of DirecTV for three months due to a fee dispute. Scripps Network that owns the Food Network and HGTV, disappointed Cablevision customers recently in New York and New Jersey over breaks in talks between the cable provider and network owner. The Food Network receives eight cents per viewer. Scripps Network are requesting a 300% rate increase. They feel 30 other channels earn that much. Plus some of the channels have lower ratings according to Scripps Network.

The Oprah Winfrey cable channel is set to begin within a year with hopes that her star power will bring 50 cents per subscriber monthly.

Customers can pay subscription rates of dimes and quarters monthly for cable channels whether they're watched or not. ESPN averages $4.10 with an increase to $5.20 in 2012. TNT receives the next highest at 96 cents per month. The Disney Channel, NFL Network, Fox News, USA and ESPN2 each receive 50 cents monthly.

Today 's consumers are recovering from a recession. They could cancel their cable television in masses to comply with their own budget restraints or call their local service providers and threaten to cancel their subscription. This action can sometimes lead to quick discount adjustments on the cable billing.

A couple of football fans in Orlando, FL asked for an emergency injunction recently to avert their alma mater bowl game being blocked out due to a broadcast and cable dispute. The fans lost the injunction; however, a new contract between the Fox Network and Time Warner Cable was negotiated 45 minutes before game kickoff.

3D Painting on HGTV Network?
A few days ago I caught the tail end of a tv show on HGTV. It was pretty early in the day and there was a gentleman who had painted peices of paper then used a razer to cut them in a such a way that all he had to do was fold them and glue them down then slide them into a shadow box type frame. Does anyone know the name of this show and where I can find instructions on how to do this? Thanks so much!

BITS; Disruptions: TV Makers Ignore Apps At Their Own Peril

12 Mar 2012 at 12:00am  SAN FRANCISCO -- Every night, I get home from work, drop onto the couch and sit there surfing the Web or watching videos on my 3 1/2-inch iPhone screen. My big-screen HDTV sits powered off on the other side of the room. It isn't broken, either - well, at least not in the traditional sense. It's actually brand new. When I moved here last year I...

Q & A; Talking Out of Turn

6 Mar 2012 at 12:00am  Q.I watch television through a small antenna attached to my HDTV. Sometimes the sound and picture get increasingly out of sync as a show goes on. The sound usually precedes the picture. Why does that happen? A. Although the pictures and sound in digital television are transmitted together (the technical term is ''multiplexed''), they are ''separate...

STATE OF THE ART; Big Screen, Powered By iPhone

8 Dec 2011 at 12:00am  Everything changed when people started writing their own apps for the iPhone. Suddenly its talents as a phone -- which, at least at the outset, weren't particularly impressive -- paled in comparison to its abilities as a computer. These days, this business of phone-as-brain goes way beyond stand-alone apps. Nowadays, the iPhone handles the...
