1080p HDTV
You may know that 1080i refers to 1080 lines of vertical resolution interlaced. This means that instead of 30 frames a second, the TV displays 60 fields per second, where each field contains alternate lines of the picture. Because the fields are refreshed so quickly, your brain interprets the signal as 30 full frames per second.
720p means 720 vertical lines of progressive scan video where every frame of the signal is displayed in its entirety, giving a higher-quality, film-like appearance to the picture.
Most HDTVs or HDTV-ready TVs support either 720p or both 1080i and 720p, very few support 1080p HDTV. Part of the reason for this is that very few broadcasters want to broadcast 1080p signals. The reason for that is that 1080p requires significantly higher bandwidth than either 1080i or 720p. And for broadcasters, bandwidth is a precious commodity. Using up more bandwidth for one signal means that there is less room for other channels. So in many cases, opting for a 1080p signal would mean dropping or degrading other channels.
Is 1080p HDTV important? Well, yes and no. Not all video footage benefits greatly from progressive scan. Sports broadcasts and action movies look better at 720p than 1080i because there is lots of fast movement and the interlacing in 1080i is sometimes noticeable, reducing the quality of the picture. Movies and TV shows where there is not a great deal of fast action look better at 1080i than 720p because the higher resolution has a greater impact on quality than the progressive scan, which has little effect where there is only a small difference in the image between frames.
So, while 1080p HDTV is the best of both worlds, the cost in terms of bandwidth, is very high compared to the benefit for most people most of the time.
PC on a HDTV (resolution problem)?
I got one of the Emerson 32" HDTV's from the walmart black Friday sale and it does NOT have the advertised PC (vga 15 pin) connector, although it does have a second Componet (r,b,g rca type) connection when it adverted with only one. i got a HDMI to DVI cable for $3 at a goodwill and hooked my PC to it. It DOES NOTHING until you get to the windows logon screen and then well it look as bad as it did when i hooked my tv tuner card to a CRT TV with a S-video cable. Is there a driver for XP that adds the proper resolution to XP? i got close at 1360 x 768 but i know LCD's look best at the native resolution (1366x768 here) I though it would look nice and crisp like my LCD monitor but, the test is fairly hard to read. though if i could get the proper resolution it may fix the issue. thanks and you could reply to my gmail account Theobituary@...guess the rest silly :P
thanks

HDTV/ Resolution/Video game questions?
OK so I have a Playstation 3 and I am wanting to get a good HDTV to play it on. I have been researching this for a little while and I still am a Little confused. Here are my questions
1.) I heard in the past( say about a year or two ago that the best type of HDTV to get to play video games on was and LCD TV, is that still true or does it matter any more what kind you get? I also heard that if you have a plasma HDTV that if you keep it on the same frame or what ever for a long time the image can be burned on to the screen, Is that still true?
2.) I have seen on alot of video games a "resolution" I quess standard, I would say, like for EX: Killzone 2 will run on 1080i, or 720p, now I think that the only tv i would get would be on one of these standards but( I was just trying to clarify this before i made a purchase on such an expensive item) If I bought a TV not one of those resolutions would I still be able to play the my games?
3.) Will I be able my playstation 3 and play with "HD" graphics, even though I do not have any "HD programing" for actually watching TV.
4.) I am looking for something in the $500 or lower price range, any suggestions on what TV i should get or the brand I should select.
Well thank you all for taking the time to answer my questions, I know it was kind of long but, this will be very help full to me on my "quest" to buy a new TV----- Thanks
