Is HDTV Really Important For A Home Theater?

The amount of HDTV programming is increasing rapidly, with HDTV broadcast, cable, and satellite service increasing in availability across the country. Also, the audio that is supplied with HDTV video is in surround sound, which takes further advantage of your surround sound receiver. Another twist in the setup is that even though DVD is not a high resolution format, HDTVs can display what is referred to as a progressive scan signal. This enables you to get the most out of your DVD player (most players can output progressive scan which gives the viewer a smoother film-like image when shown on a progressive-scan capable television). In addition, there are a growing number of DVD players that have HD-upscaling capability, which takes further advantage of high definition capabilities of HD-compatible televisions.

The road to HDTV hasn't been a smooth one. Lack of logical leadership from the government side has caused confusion over standards and timetables. In addition, lack of enthusiastic co-operation between broadcasters, cable/satellite providers, and manufacturers has injected further confusion for retailers on how to sell HDTV and consumers as what products to buy, how to use them, and to what programs are actually available in HDTV.

However, despite this, HDTV is making progress with more affordable products and accessible programming, making it an increasing viable choice for the consumer. There are more local TV stations installing the needed hardware to implement HDTV. Satellite services and a Cable TV providers are providing an increasing number of HDTV feeds.

Programming providers, such as Showtime, HBO, Discovery, ESPN, HDnet, and all of the major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, and WB) are dedicating more broadcast hours to HDTV, with FOX expected to fully join in with its HDTV programming in FALL 2004.

All of the above issues surrounding HDTV give rise to confusion for the average consumer.
