The Advantages of LCD TV
So you've decided to take the plunge and pick up a high-end television for your home. But you're hearing a lot of about LCD vs. Plasma and the discussion tends to be over your head. Fear not! The following information provides a look at LCD's side of the story, and gives you some of the advantages of choosing LCD over Plasma.
How does LCD TV work?
LCD TVs are made using two transparent panels that polarized and glued together. One of the two panels is coated with a special polymer that contains the Liquid Crystals from which LCD TV gets its name. A current of light is then passed through these crystals which creates the images we see on our LCD TV screen.
What are the Advantages of LCD TV?
OK, enough with the technical stuff B let's get to the real benefits of owning an LCD-TV and why they represent a better purchase decision than Plasma televisions.
Advantages of LCD include:
- Higher brightness levels. LCD TVs are generally easier to watch than their plasma counterparts because they have a higher brightness capability. That means colors are sharper and the picture quality bolder and brighter than other technologies.
- It's plug-and-play all the way. Unlike some high-end plasma TVs and other devices, LCD TVs come equipped with tuners inside the unit. So all you need to do is plug it in and enjoy the show.
- Multi-functionality. One of the coolest things about LCD TVs is that they can be used for a variety of different purposes, including:
o Home video player B Plug in your digital camcorder and your LCD TV will deliver a cinematic experience unmatched on rival product types.
o Computer monitor B Because of the sharp quality of the LCD TV's graphics, text and web-based images look super-sharp.
o HDTV player B Most LCD TVs are now HDTV ready right out of the box. And boy, do they deliver, especially when using a BluRay DVD player.
Why choose LCD TV over Plasma?
There are several advantages to choosing an LCD TV over a plasma TV, including:
- With an LCD TV you won't have to worry about static images getting Aburned@ into the screen.
- LCD TVs are generally lighter than Plasma TVs, making them easier to hang on the wall
- The brightness of the LCD TVs gives them the power to produce a sharper image than many Plasma screens.
- Until recently, LCD TVs were more expensive that Plasma models. But in the past year, the price has dropped so much that is now possible to get much more bang for your buck@ with an LCD model.

Overclocking Phenom II X4 965?
I want to overclock my Phenom II X4 965 (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103727) to 4.2 GHz. My mobo is an ASUS M4A88TD-V/USB3 (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131646). I will be using a XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler (http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233003). Will it work?

How many times can you reseat a CPU cooler before damagaing or wearing out components? i.e. CPU?
I have a Xigmatek Dark Knight HDT-S1283V (W) fitted to an ASUS Crosshair III Formula AM2+/AM3 Motherboard. It fits without a back plate and is held in place by a slim retention arm on a standard (already applied to the board) retention module.
I took the OLD cpu cooler off which was fitted by PC Specialist, an I put it back on. I then removed that a day after, after figuring out that I did in fact have all necessary parts to fit the Dark Knight, but this time I think I may have put a tad too much paste on. Temps are only 2-3 degrees better under load, idles are exactly the same as before and it is very disappointing.
When I asked PC Specialist about my temps they claimed I had read to much into it, an that my temps were fine. I said I bought the cooler for the sake of better temps not ones exactly the same. In the same e-mail they said:
"The best way to do it is to immediately apply the cooler and attach it after spreading the CPU paste and locking it down straight away, this will stop it from creating air bubbles.
But you don?t want to keep taking it off again and again, this WILL cause problems, the temperatures you have got now look absolutely fine, and to keep re-seating it when working is not going to do it any good."
- That was a quote from the bottom half of the last e-mail I have received from them, after questioning them regarding the same temps. I'm concerned about damaging or weakening my components but if I re-seat the CPU cooler that means it'd of been taken off and replaced 4 or 5 times.
I use MX-4 thermal compound. The Xigmatek HDT-S1283V (W) is a HDT - Heat Direct Touch CPU cooler with tiny gaps. I didn't fancy filling these in, an I read a page from benchmark reviews about applying TIM to these coolers. It wasn't very good. The instructions that came with the cooler itself indicated spreading the CPU thinly and evenly across the CPU itself before applying the cooler. When I first put the Xigmatek DK on, I put 2 lines on the gaps on either side of the centre copper pipe. Perhaps a tad too much, but I didn't drench the platform.
Any ideas how many times I can reapply Thermal Interfacing Compound before I damage the CPU or damage or bend the MB?
Serious, honest answers only please.
Note: Since each reply shows PC Specialist support to have a different guy each time, even in the same string of messages, at one point prior to buying the DK, I asked about the retention arm. The guy said he had the same board as me, and a DK an that he re-seats it quite often an that the retention arm doesn't bend. It all seems very contradicting. I don't know who to believe.
Thank you.
Regards,
FX
The Core Temps of the 955 in a warm room idle at about 26-28c. But this is when AMD Cool n' Quiet technology is enabled on the board and the Processor is down-clocked from 3.21Ghz to 803Mhz.
The retention arm is quite flimsy as the metal is rather thin. This may be the only weak part, but I hope it would be durable enough for multiple applications / clamping pressure applications.
So long as the CPU, motherboard and retention module remain strong and in full working order, I will be happy.
Does anybody else disagree with the quoted text from PC Specialist? TIM Method? Their advice regarding the degradation of parts when taking the cooler off multiple times?
Thanks so far! Much appreciated!
Note: the Xigmatek Dark Knight uses PWM. I figure I have applied the paste wrong using benchmarkreviews methods of putting the TIM on the HDT first, an not putting a thin layer spread about on the CPU first as Xigmatek suggested in the instruction manual, because load temps are poor.
