DLP are not "flat panels". They are smaller box's than the old "Big Screen" televisions - but they are 12 - 18 inches deep.

The good side of a DLP:

- you can get bigger screens for the same money
- Bulb can be replaced every 3 years to bring it back to original brightness
- No burn in issues

The bad side of DLP:

- You have to replace the bulb every 3 years
- Dome of the side-viewing has issues (check this out with a display model)

1080p - most of the HDTV's are this resolution. It just means the TV is compatible with the highest available images today.
