1080p - The Future is Now!

First, we all watched NTSC video at 480i, and we liked it, because we knew no better. Then some intrepid(and well off) home theater enthusiasts were lucky enough to enjoy 480p, thanks to the Faroudja LD-100 line doubler or Runco IDTV set ups. Because the Faroudja units cost $20, 000.00 in the early 90 s, and only worked with data or graphics grade projectors, they were not exactly mass market. As technology improved, prices decreased, and more people could enjoy progressive scan video in their home theaters.

Fast forward 15 years or so. Now you can get a DVD player with Faroudja progressive scan technology on a chip for under $200.00. Just about every TV and projector you can buy takes progressive scan video. Indeed, digital TVs and home theater projectors will convert video to progressive scan, because they require progressive scan video at the sets native resolution to function. If the video is not in the proper format, it will be converted inside the set. Most DLP or LCD imaging chips used in consumer TVs and projectors now have native vertical resolutions of either 480, 576 or 720 lines. Most LCD and plasma displays have 480, 720 or 768 lines.

In the fall of 2005, manufacturers started showing the latest generation of video products. Behold! 1080p! Why all the fuss? Because 1080p is the top dog in HDTV, that s why. It has the highest resolution of all the 18 approved HDTV formats, with 1920 x 1080 pixels. There are two 1080 resolutions approved for HDTV, 1080/60i and 1080/30p. The advantage of 1080p over 1080i is that, like a computer monitor, a 1080p display will show all 1080 lines with every video field, whereas a 1080i device will only show at a time. Digital displays require progressive video, so any 1080i program material is deinterlaced inside the set, converting it to 1080p. Up until the advent of 1080p displays, it was also down converted to the native resolution of the imaging chip or flat panel.

One caveat at this point, amazingly enough, many of the first generation 1080p TVs do not accept a 1080p input. Huh?? You read that correctly. It s true, of the first 1080p sets introduced, only the HP units will actually accept a 1080p input. The Mitsubishi will accept 1080p, but only through its computer input. Most of the flat panel displays don t seem to have this limitation and will accept 1080p.

At this point in time, there is no commercially available 1080p program material, with the exception of some Microsoft Windows Media HD discs. With respect to HDTV you can get 720p or 1080i, but no 1080p at this time. Fox, ESPN and ABC broadcast in 720p. while CBS, NBC, TNT, the WB and HD Net all use 1080i. Soon, however, Sony will release Blu-Ray Disc and Toshiba, DH-DVD. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Disc will have the capability to support 1080p. When the time comes, you ll be able to just buy or rent a disc and enjoy 1080p in all it s splendor. Good News! Netflix has announced they will rent both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD as soon as they are introduced.

Should i get an xbox 360 or a ps3?
they're both $300 now and i'm NOT gonna get both for christmas, if one. xbox details: more ppl have one, it has SOME better games like halo 3, internet is better but you have to pay for it so that's probably not happening, more break downs probably, needs an ethernet cord (i still have another open port on my router so the trouble would be getting it from the first floor through the the ceiling and such to a wall socket and other things which is a hassel). ps3 details:less ppl have them so even with free, not-as-good internet, it wouldn't be as fun, internet is wireless, has blu-ray* *my dad has a recently upgraded home theater system with the following: enhanced 7.1 surround sound with those really good 70's Bose speakers, light controlled room, 90" 1080p projector screen with a Sony BRAVIA VPL-HW10 SXRD Projector (one of the top picks of the year by home theater magazine), the most premium everything package from Dish connected with an HDMI cable outputted to a receiver at 1080i that upconverts (specifically by deinterlacing it in this situation) to 1080p and spits it out to the porjector, a laser disc player hooked up with component cables and coaxial digital audio, a VCR player hooked up some how probably at the best that it can be (i haven't looked at that part), internet radio from around the world (yes, with an ethernet cable but that would not be just moved to the 360, we would do another cord) including FM and AM and he also separately hooked up local AM, FM, and (Sirius)XM radio, a record player, and most importantly a not-HD-DVD-or-blu-ray dvd player that somehow can output 1080i through an HDMI cable to be upconverted to 1080p before it reaches the projector but the dvd's we put in are still 480p max so i'm thinking that that's the only not fully upgraded part and one day movies will only come out on blu-ray so he'll have to buy one eventually but if we have a ps3 he MIGHT not buy one or at least for a while so that decreases the cost -- maybe. i want to know what you guys think about the whole thing with that specifically as included with the main question and as a seperate question. things that don't really play a factor: buying a wireless adapter probably won't happen, true the graphics on the ps3 are better but they're close enough that i don't want to include that in my thinking extra things: now that i think about it, if i get one then instead of going through the trouble of another 50ft HDMI cord (and no, the length makes almost no difference until like 400ft, u ppl are wrong, don't comment on that) through what would have to be a new wall socket up to the ceiling etc. so it would be in the same place as where we put all my other systems when i play them, we would probably keep it in the same room as the receiver because ALL of the controllers would be wireless and the cords would just be existent in a MUCH better way but if we didn't with the xbox then the new wall socket could include ethernet but even still with bringing it from upstairs... but if the xbox was in the same room as the receiver then maybe the ethernet cord would be simple because it would follow the exact same path as the one to the receiver. if there are any cost differences in terms of accessories, controllers, games etc. that i haven't listed here, wheather they be the same or different, please let me know. any info would be helpful. i'll try to answer any questions but i don't know how often i'll be checking this p.s. also, maybe i should say that there are two and i want one and here are the details and you can make the decision. what do you think? p.p.s. you have more than a week to answer. i'll try to remember to keep extending the expiration but keep commenting/answering anyway

800x600 Projector with 2200 lumens vs 1080P 1700 lumens Projector?
I had an Optoma EP721 Projector with a native resolution of 800x600, but the lumens were 2200. I'm thinking about getting the Optoma HD20 now but it only has 1700 lumens but also has a native 1080P resolution. Should I upgrade (in resolution wise) to the Optoma HD20 1080P projector with the "sacrifice" of the lumens?

What is the cheapest 1080p projector and where from?
I really want a projector for Christmas and i know you can get a reasonably priced 780p but it's old technology and i want to project full hd blu ray movies 1080p. There is no way the wife will pay more than £600 for one because she thinks its a novelty (if she really loved me she would) If anyone has any advice it would be really appreciated.
